Considering the country has an area of 316 sq km and a population of just under 400,000 it surprises most people to learn that we've got a drag strip and that the sport is very popular. When they then discover that we often run faster times than the rest of Europe, they're understandably gob smacked. I'm proud to say that my husband and father in law (with the help of my dad's products) are greatly involved in making their customers some of the top race contenders. Admittedly last season was one of their worst and they were plagued with problems, which hindered them from making such an impact. We're expecting this season to be more successful as they made an incredible start this weekend.
One of their top customers runs in a CA (Competition Altered) class with a space frame, Escort Mk 1 body, highly modified 2L Cosworth engine and an average of 80bhp from the nitrous system. Today they hoped to break the 8 second barrier but kept being disappointed with near misses such as 8.07 secs and 8.002 secs! Then on the final race of the day they made a leap down to 7.80 secs. Marty (my husband) and the team were obviously ecstatic and drunk at the end of the day and I missed it all due to a bad cold. Hopefully there'll be plenty more winning times for me to enjoy.
Another happy customer is running with a slightly modified V6 Cosworth engine (rally sports cam, ported heads, forged pistons and rods and enforced cylinder block) in a Cortina Mk 3 (very heavy 4 door saloon car) with a single shot of approximately 120bhp nitrous. Last season his PB was 12.1 and today he knocked it down to 11.9 (shutting the throttle off about 50ft before the finish line and slamming on the brakes). In a perfect situation he could easily have ran an 11.8/11.7 and we are obviously confident for the future.
My husband and his family put all their effort and time into their hobby (he tries to tell me it's work but I know better) so they deserve all the success they get.
Hopefully I'll have more good results to report throughout the season. _________________ WIN with WON |

FANTASTIC NEWS!!!!!
Last year was a bad year in many ways for me as a number of my customers / agents struggled to get the best from their vehicles but we solved those problems at the end of last year and it looks like the results are speaking for themselves!!!!! LOL
I've got to make everyone aware that my son Marty has worked tirelessly to attain these results and I'm very proud and happy that he's got the results he deserves.
I'm sure he will continue to work on his stable of customers cars and produce many more similar and probably improved results as the year progresses.
This is a great start for Marty and a great start for Highpower and I'm confident this is going to be a special year.
All I need now is for Johnny to follow Marty's example by going out and lighting the track up with a scorching performance, (Go Johnny Go).

The World (especially America) would be AMAZED at the professionalism of the Maltese Drag racing scene. They have an outstanding Drag strip and some seriously quick cars built by some knowledgeable builders/tuners.
When I was running the Euro Challenge some 10 to 15 years ago my Maltese agent brought over their Cosworth powered Escort to race in the challenge. They'd run a 9.9 in Malta whilst over here the class record was about 10.3, so rumours started going about that the strip in Malta was likely to be shorter or the timing gear inaccurate. However when they ran at the Pod and at York, they ran better times than the 9.9 despite the problems of having to adjust to different weather and track conditions etc.
I'll let Lisa or Marty tell you what the class records are and what the top guys are running.

Well I help out now but my son Marty is doing a fine job of taking it all on, so I won't be needed soon.
I contributed advice to 3 of Marty's top cars and they all seem to have improved since then but I'm sure Marty will have contributed as much if not more to these results.
Anyway when I retire, I hope it's 100% nitrous free, just as I made a clean break when I moved on from being so dedicated to my British bike business. ;-)
You young guys should have soaked up all my knowledge by then. LOL

Hi Denny,
Marty will be pleased to know that he's inspired you to aim for higher heights. We both appreciate the advances you've made in the relatively short time you've been selling Highpower products. We're sure you'll have plenty of achievements to report.
Hi V8 Kid,
Yes let's hope our good luck rubs off on you and the rest of our customers.
Thanks for your support Loopy. You're welcome to visit our tiny island to experience our racing scene and the rest Malta has to offer.
Very true dad, they made a huge impact when they raced in the Euro Challenge and shocked a lot of people.
Two years ago top fuels were running 5 secs on the track and since then improvements have been made, so yes the drag strip is impressive (if only the roads were as smooth!).
The winner of last years CA class set a class record of 7.77, which we've almost reached. For the past 10-15 years we were the leaders in most classes and it's only in the past 2 years that we've lost our grasp due to running new set-ups plus a serious race accident. In fact the owner and ex-driver of the Escort broke 7 ribs 1 1/2 years ago by smashing his car into the wall when he lost control due to water leaking through a blown head gasket under his rear tires. Obviously this was a huge set back and disappointment as up until that point the car had been running consistent 8.2 secs runs for the previous 3 years.
In a few days time I'll post some pictures of the car.
Thanks again for everyone's congratulatory words :-).
Regards,

Hi Lisa/Marty,
Congratulations on that run, that IS fast and a massive difference over last year. You wouldn't believe how chuffed your Dad is over here
Hopefully as you say the luck should spread around all our customers including Johnny. Looks like we'll find out this weekend!
Once again, well done and I look forward to seeing some pics. Do you have any pics of the drag strip you could put up aswell? Us brits would love to see some nice weather LOL. _________________ Regards,

Denny,
Some men marry women for their money but I'm sure Marty married me for my father ;-). As you'd expect, he always encourages dad to coincide his visits with a race meeting, so he can put him to good use.
Hi Ant,
Thanks and I'll pass on your message to Marty. Whilst they're enjoying their return to the top, they've already set their sights higher (or should that be lower :-)) to what they believe is an achievable target of 7.5 secs!!!! As you said, dad's chuffed now so imagine how ecstatic he'll be when they make a 7.5 second run (I'm imagining him running around the office shouting :-)).
Regards,

Denny, both Marty and I would like to meet you so we'd be happy to show you around the island and the race track. If you enjoy hot weather and swimming in the sea, you'll love Malta in the summer months (it can reach a sweltering 40 degrees). If you or anyone else would like to find out more about drag racing in Malta you can visit the official site at http://maltadragracing.com (they haven't yet posted information about last weeks event though)

I'd say a 7.8 sec 1/4 time is 'pretty good' for 150 cubes wouldn't you Johnny?? So you'd have thought Tubez would have been on and acknowledged the achievement of it, especially after we acknowledged his results!!!!

Latest result is this top customer ran a 7.75s run this weekend and due to a start line brake problem the spaced out driver spent as much time on the limiter in each gear as he did off it!!!!
Therefore better times are certain next time out.
Congratulations to Marty and our top Maltese customer.

Yep and they may hold the current record but they're unsure of what the top contender has done. When they run what the car has the potential for, there will be no doubt who holds the record then.

This weekend was the beginning of the new drag racing season in Malta and our customer with the Escort made a fantastic start. He ended the last season with a PB of 7.71, which has now been reduced to 7.64. The run wasn't perfect, he shifted too early and shut off the nitrous a second early (not sure how much difference that made though), so hopefully he'll be into the 7.5's at the next meeting. I'll keep you all updated.
Regards,

Congrats to everyone envolved, looks like its starting out as a promising year. Short shifting a nitrous motor is not that bad of a thing and they may have found something in doing so with the quicker et even though the nitrous shut off early. _________________ Johnny B

1 thing about a Nitrous engine is they love to be lugged,
Short shifting is what I found makes ET with these babys,
